Anthony Davis in visible pain after the goal against Nikola Jokic

The Dallas Mavericks they enter their Monday night clash against the Denver Nuggets with a 6-15 record, which puts them in 12th place in the loaded Western Conference. Although qualifying for the playoffs is still a long shot for this team, the Mavericks are not without hope. after all, Anthony Davis recently returned from a calf strain that sidelined him for 14 straight games, and he was back in action against the Nuggets after sitting out Saturday night’s contest against the Los Angeles Clippers.

At least Davis bolsters their interior defense, while also giving them a source of easy buckets on the interior. He will certainly come in handy against Nuggets star Nikola Jokic. But Davis’ penchant for taking minor shots here and there makes relying on him a bit scary, especially as he gets older.

On Monday, Davis suffered an injury scare against the Nuggets. With time winding down in the second quarter, the Mavericks star was able to recover Jokic to give his team a two-point lead. However, in the process of knocking down the basketball, he was done jamming his finger leaning on the edge, holding him as he walked down the field.

An injury to Davis unrelated to his past calf or groin issues should at least give the Mavericks a reason to breathe. But it’s certainly not the best thing in the world for Davis to take another hit that could affect his availability — which could then slow down his trade value and become an even bigger obstacle for the Mavs moving forward.

Considering how much the Mavericks have struggled this season, not many expected them to do so well against the Nuggets, especially on the road. Cooper Flagg is coming into his own, and Davis has been productive, as he usually is when healthy. But it’s Ryan Nembhardt who steals the show, as he currently has 27 points to lead all scorers in a tight third quarter.

Maybe this Mavs team has some life in it — as long as Davis is healthy.
