Anthony Edwards completely shut down after dropping 44 on the Pelicans

After the rough part he is in The Minnesota Timberwolves were embarrassed by the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings and then put in their place by the mighty Oklahoma City Thunder, they bounced back to win two straight against good, if injured, opponents (Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs). It was the way they played for much of their 149-142 overtime win against the New Orleans Pelicans that was so disappointing.

The Pelicans outplayed the Timberwolves for most of the night, demanding another Herculean effort from Anthony Edwardswho had to pluck victory from the jaws of defeat. With the Timberwolves up by two, 129-127, with seconds left in the fourth, Edwards drove to the rim to easily tie the game and give Minnesota the eventual victory in overtime.

Edwards finished with 44 points on the night on 16-30 shooting from the field (6-13 from beyond the arc) and had to play 47 minutes just to avoid another embarrassing loss for the Timberwolves. And at the end of the game, the exhaustion in him was palpable. He was hunched over and holding on to his shorts just as the final buzzer sounded after he entered a shift that required him to play nearly 36 consecutive minutes.

Edwards logged just five minutes and 33 seconds of playing time that night as he went on to play the final 35:27. It’s just an insane workload for the Timberwolves to put on Edwards this early in the season against the lowly Pelicans, but to his credit, he was up to the task.

This Timberwolves team is sliding against inferior teams, and that has been their trend for the last few seasons.

Regardless, Minnesota will want to give Edwards more breathing room moving forward. They have to get another guard on the trade market to prevent overloading their best player at the start of the season.

Edwards has at least one full day of rest before taking on the Pelicans again on the road.
