Zach LaVine, Malik Monk playing status against the Knicks

The Kings could be without two of their top four guards on Tuesday night, with Zach LaVine and Malik Monk both filling out the injury report. LaVine is in danger of missing his second straight game with back pain, while Monk is a new addition with an ankle injury. Monk picked up an injury on Sunday, which required a trip to the locker room before halftime, but returned in the second half.
LaVine has already missed 13 games this season, but his absence Sunday marked his first missed game since Jan. 2. It is also listed as questionable for Sacramento’s recent outing against the Detroit Pistons before being demoted to out.
Monk has missed eight games in his fourth season with the Kings, including a three-game layoff in early January. The dynamic sixth man is currently in one of his best stretches of the season, coming off a 19-point performance against the Pistons in just 22 minutes.
Either player sitting out Tuesday would open up more minutes for rookie Nick Clifford — who started Sunday in LaVine’s absence — Keon Ellis and Devin Carter. Russell Westbrook, who has led the team in scoring in three of the last six games, would also be in line for increased offensive responsibility.
Between the two, LaVine seems less likely to play than Monk. The Kings have little to no reason to rush him back, and another absence would open up more court time for their young guards in a lost season.
Monk will likely do everything in his power to stay on the court to keep his momentum going and it should be a questionable positive. Unless he suffered a setback, his ability to return from Sunday’s ankle injury bodes well for his status on Tuesday.
