As a third option, RJ Barrett gains efficiency

rj barrettDuring the training camp, RJ Barrett promised to be able to influence the game despite the arrival of Brandon Ingramcome trade cards inside the Raptors. After seven games, the facts prove him right: the former Knick is off to one of the best starts to a season of his career.

He is currently averaging 20.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists, along with skill (56% shooting, 37% from 3-point range). He had his best performance of the season on Thursday against Memphis: 27 points on 10/19 shooting.

“With Brandon Ingram, shots are easier because he’s an extra threat that opposing teams have to focus on.” the Raptors winger explains. “I think we’re doing a good job because everyone is sharing the ball on the floor and to be honest, we’re all shooting really well.”

Along with Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett has settled into the third offensive option role, and it’s working. While defenses focus on the two All-Stars, the Canadian makes himself available: catch and shoot, cut or one-on-one if he has a favorable matchup. Above all, it forces less than before.

“At the beginning of my career, I would not like to play in this configuration”

“He’s a better 3-point shooter, but he’s also a better shooter.” congratulates Darko Rajaković. “He doesn’t force shots off the dribble and he doesn’t make complicated shots. He manages to position himself in the right spots on the court and his teammates do a great job of finding him and giving him open shots.”

At the dawn of his seventh NBA season, RJ Barrett is showing a different state of mind.

“I don’t think at the beginning of my career I would have liked to play in this configuration, I wasn’t mature enough” points out RJ Barrett. “Now I’m older, I’ve had other experiences and the most important thing is that the team wins. It’s important how to help the team and how to adapt to the team’s way of playing. It’s not necessarily what you do or what you want to do, but what the team needs.”

Since the beginning of the season, formerly of New York he’s only taking 13.5 shots a night, his lowest total since his freshman year, and again, he’s never been that proficient.

After next Tuesday’s matchup against Milwaukee, the Raptors (3-4) will begin a five-game East road trip with affordable opponents such as the Nets or Pacers. A chance to see if RJ Barrett can continue his momentum and help the Raptors win. And continue to climb the rankings?
