At the Warriors, an email from Joe Lacob puts pressure on Steve Kerr
After the loss at the Moda Center, Warriors fan Justin Dutari sends a text message to the owner Joe Lacob. Simple diagnosis: Golden State needs a “real second option”“qualities” of Jimmy Butler would be “underutilized”and the workforce would lack size per position.
Joe Lacob’s answer comes quickly, just as direct: “You can’t be as frustrated as I am. I’m working on it. It’s complicated. The style of play. The coach’s wishes regarding the players. The trends of the league. Jimmy is not the problem.” Justin Dutari posts the exchange on Reddit, and the franchise confirms its authenticity.
Anecdote aside, these few lines reveal an increasingly palpable tension: the tension of a team stuck between its championship habits and the need to evolve.
By implication, email necessarily shines in the spotlight Steve Kerrthe custodian of an offensive system built over 12 seasons around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, with four titles under his belt, but not necessarily matching the profile of the younger (or newcomers) players on the team.
“We are all frustrated”
Asked about the problem, Steve Kerr downplays it: “Not a big topic”, he assureswhile acknowledging that he had seen the email. The coach is also in the last year of his contract and explained during the training camp that he is not looking for an immediate extension, but prefers to wait until the end of the season to talk.
“We are all frustrated”conclusion Steve Kerr. “Joe’s frustrated. I’m frustrated. Steph and (Green), everybody’s frustrated. That’s kind of how the league works. I hate it when people release private emails. Imagine if all the emails became public, how hard it would be to live with them.”
But in the Gulf, leaks are commonplace, which apparently doesn’t keep Steve Kerr from sleeping.
“Joe supports me 100%. I support him. We have a great relationship. We have a lot of continuity here. The stability of our organization is one of our strengths.” he can conclude so, despite the turmoil.
