Austin Reeves admits how ‘special’ Bronie’s lob was in win against Heat

The The Los Angeles Lakers have found life without LeBron James to start the 2025-26 season to make it smooth so far, as they beat the Miami Heat 130-120 on Sunday for their fifth win of the season in seven tries. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves weren’t quite as dominant on the scoring front, as the team used a more balanced effort to move to 5-2 on the season.

While there were plenty of good plays for the Lakers that night, there might not have been a better game for the Purple and Gold in their win over the Heat than Incredible lob pass from Reaves to Brony James for a monster two-handed throw in transition. James has been getting legitimate garbage-free minutes mostly because of the Lakers’ injury woes, but Brony showed he belongs on an NBA court with the way he handled himself Sunday night.

After the game, Reaves admitted how big of a deal it was for him to be the one to throw the lob to Broney — because this might be making him the first player in history in NBA history to throw a pass to both a father and his son.

“I have to be the first person in NBA history to throw a lob to a father and a lob to a son. It has to be? While they’re still on the same team,” Reaves said, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin . “It was great. I told Bron as soon as I signed off afterwards that it was a pretty special moment.”

Bronney didn’t do much in goal, as his only two points of the night came on a lob from Reaves. But he played 18 quality minutes for the Lakers and was a passable +1 on the night.

Is Brony James coming into his own for the Lakers?

It must be very difficult for Brony to carry the last name James considering how historically great his father was during his illustrious NBA career. But he seems to be playing a small role for himself with the Lakers, a sort of defensive specialist who can chase faster guards around the perimeter.

With the Lakers still missing several key pieces (Gabe Vincent, for example, will miss multiple weeks with an ankle injury), Brony has a chance to secure himself a bigger role in head coach JJ Redick’s rotation.
