Austin Reeves drops the mic with a perfect reaction to a 51-point stunner

The Los Angeles Lakers were coming off a huge win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night, and Luka Doncic continued his great start to the season by following up his 43-point opening night effort with a 49-point masterpiece in a 128-110 win over the Timberwolves. however, Doncic suffered multiple injuries during that contest that would keep him out for at least a week — putting the Lakers’ already undersized players in a tough spot.

But on Sunday night, Austin Reaves took it upon himself to carry the Lakers as he approached superstardom. Although the Lakers were missing both Doncic and LeBron James, who is still recovering from nerve issues in his back, Reaves made sure the Purple and Gold stayed on the winning track. He scored an incredible career-high 51 points in a 127-120 win over the division rival Sacramento Kings as he left the Sacramento defense pretty much helpless every step of the way.

Reaves has blossomed into a full-fledged superstar, and this is simply the latest evidence to point to that fact. The Kings may not be the best opposition, but going on the road and scoring 51 and making mincemeat of Dennis Schroeder and Russell Westbrook’s defense is the sign of someone who has made a leap. And what better way for the Lakers to highlight Reaves’ career night than that a huge win.

“All that matters is we won,” Reaves said with a huge smile on his face during a postgame interview with Spectrum SportsNet’s Mike Trudell. “We’ve got another tough one tomorrow night. Quick turnaround. We’ll be right back.”

(Fast forward to 1:20.)

Reaves became only the fifth player in a Lakers uniform who has scored over 50 goals since the turn of the century, joining LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Anthony Davis — a feat he doesn’t take lightly.

“I don’t deserve all that. I grew up watching all those guys. I’m speechless,” Reaves added.

Reaves began his career as a Laker all the way through the Summer League; coaches were impressed with his hustle and ability to be a good guy on offense. But Reaves has blossomed into a major force in his own right, and he may be in for his first All-Star season if he continues this incredible play.

Of course, it will be impossible for him to score 50 every night. But the Lakers will need him to step up in a similar fashion as they await the return of both Doncic and James.
