Bam Adebayo shouts out A’ja Wilson for helping him out of a slump against the Suns

MIAMI – Like The Miami Heat are in the midst of an inconsistent seasonlooking to turn their season around, Wednesday could be a great starting point after they put together a three-game sweep to beat the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night, 127-121. One aspect that was down on the The heat was a struggle with captain Bama Adebayo it’s been going on for a few weeks, though he’s bounced back in a big way, crediting A’ja Wilson.

Entering Tuesday’s contest, Adebayo was averaging 11.4 points per game while shooting 37.1 percent from the field and 21.7 percent (5-23) from beyond the arc over the past 11 games. Tuesday was a different story, as he recorded a game-high 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field, four-of-six from deep, along with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.

With the performance, Adebayo is now the second all-time leading scorer in franchise history with 9,461, surpassing Alonso Mourning (9,459).

This was the best two-way game fans were used to seeing from Adebayo before a two-week slump, as it was just as exciting to see the star lead Miami in the fourth quarter of what was a tight game. There was a stretch where he went on an 8-0 run of his own to help lead them to victory.

Adebayo would be asked who he reached out to for advice during the slump because, in addition to mentioning team greats Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem, he would subtly nod to Wilson.

“I mean, one of them lives with me,” Adebayo said, referring to Wilson, with whom he is in a relationship. “But obviously when you’re frustrated, you reach out to some guys who are shooters, like D-Wade…UD (Haslem) because, you know, I see myself as, like, a mix between both of them…”

As it is the relationship between Heat star Adebayo and WilsonVNBA superstars for the Las Vegas Aces, it’s well documented, there’s no doubt that each brings intensity to the court. That’s why it’s been concerning to see offensive struggles for Adebayo over the last few weeks.

However, while there’s no denying the decline he’s had offensively, he’s still impacted the game in every other aspect, especially defensivelythat Adebayo mentioned to ClutchPoints after Tuesday’s win.

“It’s one of those two-way performances that I’m capable of, and that’s the thing that a lot of people worry about the last column,” Adebayo said. “But during this slump offensively, I’ve still been working on the defensive end. We’re still ranked as the third-best defense, and nobody’s talking about it. They’re just talking about my offense. It’s obviously a great feeling to see the ball go in, and I’ve been through a slump for probably two weeks.”

“And you don’t overreact to it. You know, when you’re in this league long enough, you see some of the greats go through slumps, and when you’ve obviously been able to reach out, you talk to people, and then you just kind of quiet the noise a little bit, you kind of have that out-of-body experience, and it just becomes a spark at one point. And you know, that was that spark to carry on.

It was a great game against the Suns, with multiple instances where the game was stopped to settle things, especially when Adebayo retained Heat star Norman Powell from a potential attack on controversial forward Dillon Brooks. Still, it gave Miami a lot of momentum in the fourth quarter after another instance of the team blowing a lead in the third period, just as the Heat’s 20-point lead disappeared.

Adebayo and Powell would lead Miami in the fourth, especially the first on both sides of the ball, which not only included 13 points in the final frame, but also key defensive plays such as forcing two turnovers to give the team a chance to regain momentum.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra will speak about “karma” which Adebayo received, he also expressed how he had a “defensive player of the year” type of performance.

“And I thought Bam was a big part of that. He forced those two turnovers,” Spoelstra said. “We were kind of stuck in the mud, and it was like a Defensive Player of the Year performance during the game, he did everything on the pick-and-roll, whether he was zoning on the pick-and-roll, whether he stayed in the basket or switched, sometimes didn’t switch, put guys through, he kind of just orchestrated our whole defense and then got back to the rebound.”

“And then, of course, big threes down the stretch, the ball found real karma,” Spoelstra continued. “You know, I thought he deserved, you know, to have a great night. He really did, the way he just put so much effort and intensity into the game, and hit those two 3-pointers. And it was great to see.”

With The heat needs to come back after a terrible trip which included disappointing defeats in all three games, Adebayo helped secure a much-needed win. Adebayo got to his spots higher, with the help of the team adding some pick-and-rolls, and Miami looked for balance on offense.

As the shots came in, his teammates saw other areas he had an impact onas Tyler Hero explained to ClutchPoints.

“Obviously everybody recognizes the points and the threes and the big shots that he made, but I feel like he did all the little things, he didn’t worry about scoring, and then it’s just like karma,” Hero said after scoring 23 points against the Suns. “You’re doing all the right things defensively, you’re doing all the right things in the gaps, in between, and then you get hit, you’re not thinking like, ‘I’ve got to make it.’ It comes naturally, similar to how he played at the beginning of the year.”

The same sentiments were echoed by Powell, also revealing the message he would talk all the time in Adebayo during the fall.

“My message to him is to keep going,” Powell said. “I told him even last game, it doesn’t matter if you hit or miss, it’s empty calories,” Powell said. “I just tell him to clear his head and just play. He knows what he can do. We know what kind of player he is. It’s just clearing his mind and playing in front of him.”

Either way, Adebayo is looking to make effective outings, and the next game is crucial as Miami, now 21-19, defends its home court when the Boston Celtics visit on Thursday night.
