Benedict Maturin gets historic consolation in 2OT loss to Thunder

Benedict Maturin set historic statistics in Indiana The Pacers open the season against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night.

Entering the game, it was the Pacers’ first regular season game without All-Star guard Tyrese Halliburton. He tore his Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals against the Thunder, which will keep him out for the entire 2025-26 season.

With this situation, it was necessary for other talents on Indiana’s team to step up, and Maturina took the spotlight. In 45 minutes of action, he finished with 36 points, 11 rebounds and assists. He shot 9-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc, and 15-of-17 from the free throw line.

Mathurin achieved a franchise feat with its display, according to StatMuse. He became the first Indiana player since Jalen Rose to score as many points in a season opener.

Despite Benedict Maturin’s outstanding effort, it wasn’t quite the effort as the Pacers lost 141-135 to the Thunder in double overtime.

It was a match to remember as it was a rematch of the NBA Finals, although several key players were missing due to injury. The match more than made up for it as Mathurin shone in the opener as he battled Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with 55 points.

Rebounds and free throws made the difference in this exciting matchup. The Thunder dominated with 60 rebounds while making 45 of 51 shots at the line for 88.2% shooting. It was similar for the Pacers, but to a lesser extent. Indiana grabbed 55 rebounds, but managed to make just 30 of its 40 free throws on the night.

Five players scored in double figures for Indiana, including Maturin. Pascal Siakam had a great game with 32 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and a steal. He shot 12 of 25 overall, including 3 of 6 from downtown and 5 of 12 from the charity stripe. Next was Obi Taupin with 20 points and five rebounds, Ben Shepherd had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Jerras Walker had 13 points and four assists.

The Pacers will try to bounce back in their next game, as they are on the road. They face the Memphis Grizzlies on October 25th at 8:00 PM ET.
