Bill Simmons is crazy about Luka Doncic for the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade

With less than two weeks left until the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline, Bill Simmons laid out a headline-grabbing scenario that would reshape the league’s landscape, suggesting a real blockbuster it sends Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić that the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for the former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Simmons floated the idea on the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, framing it as a dramatic, all-in Los Angeles pivot as the deadline approaches.

“The next one is only a direct game with the Lakers. Only Luka and Kleber stand out for Giannis.”

Simmons framed the hypothetical as a bold statement of intent for the Lakers, focused on maximizing their championship-winning frame around LeBron James while retaining key complementary pieces.

“Only the Lakers say screw it and turn Luka into Giannis. Paying Reaves, keeping LeBron.”

The suggestion immediately drew skepticism from co-host Chris Ryan, who questioned the plausibility of the idea from several angles.

“Bill, is Rich Paul in the room with you?”

Simmons acknowledged the unconventional nature of the concept, especially from Milwaukee’s perspective, but argued that the Bucks could treat Doncic as a short-term asset and create a league-wide bidding war.

“No, I want to talk about it. The part that doesn’t make sense is Luka going to Milwaukee, but if you’re in Milwaukee, do this now and you have two weeks to trade Luka. Remember when all the teams were mad last year? Remember last year, like Utah, they were like we had 17 picks, we would have traded everything like it was all available to Milwaukee, if we knew Luka got it now. here’s the auction, let’s go, you have two weeks to give us everything from himself, and then they basically just buy him.
