Bill Simmons says Cooper Flagg is a “real threat” to make the Celtics in four years

Not much went right for the Dallas Mavericks so far in the 2025-26 season, but one thing fans could hang their hats on is the number one overall rookie game draft pick Cooper Flaggwho is off to a strong start to his NBA career. While fans are still waiting for Flagg’s three-point shooting to arrive at the NBA level, all the other intriguing aspects of his skill set are already starting to manifest in a big way for the Mavericks.
Mavericks fans would be forgiven for already preparing for Flagg’s exit from the franchise given the way Luka Doncic was stolen from them around this time last year, and more recently, Bill Simmons of The Ringer spoke further potential team so Flagg could have eyes if he ever left Dallas.
“I’d also be worried if I were them about Cooper Flagg coming to the Celtics in four years. I think that’s a real threat. like a tank, but don’t tank too much. His whole family is in Maine and their house is covered in Celtics stuff, and his mom is probably the biggest female Celtics fan in New England. So I’d be worried about them. Just a touch on my capsule,” Simmons said.
Indeed, Flagg has made no secret of the fact that he was a Celtics fan growing up, and he also appeared to cultivate a friendship with Boston star Jayson Tatum, following in his footsteps by attending Duke.
At this point, however, Flagg has given no indication that his loyalties lie anywhere but the Mavericks, who drafted him No. 1 overall last summer and are reportedly considering a trade for Anthony Davis that would fully hand the reins to Flagg as the face of the franchise.
Either way, the Mavericks will next take the floor Thursday night against the Utah Jazz.
