Bill Simmons suggests an intriguing trade of LeBron James and Jimmy Butler

Bill Simmons threw gasoline on the NBA discourse this week with a trade idea that immediately gained attention. On his podcast, the founder of The Ringer proposed a direct exchange between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriorssending LeBron James to the bay area and Jimmy Butler in Los Angeles, according to Yahoo.
Simmons framed the idea as a jolt to the two teams moving laterally. The Lakers are high in the West, but have been hovering around .500 recently. The Warriors find themselves outside of contender status with little buzz. His attitude relied on fun and fitness, not fantasy. A pairing of LeBron and Stephen Curry would instantly rebuild Golden State, while Butler could step into a cleaner role alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves in Los Angeles.
Why the idea got attention
Logistics do not block the conversation. James is making $52.6 million this season. Butler checks in at $54.1 million. That math works without filler parts or depth losses. On the ground, recent history adds fuel. Fans watched James and Curry thrive together during the Paris Olympics, and neither showed a sharp decline this season.
Chemistry is also important. James maintains a strong relationship with Draymond Green, which only strengthens the Warriors’ corner. Simmons even suggested that Golden State could accept the short-term nature of James’ contract, perhaps extending it for another run.
On the Lakers side, Butler’s contract is in line with the long-term planning discussed by general manager Rob Pelinka. Los Angeles wants flexibility until 2027, when stars like Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo could hit the market. Butler bridges that gap as he embraces a frictionless secondary scoring role.
The real hurdle remains James’ no-trade clause. Still, the allure of finishing a career alongside Curry and Green carries weight. Simmons summed it up simply. A deal seems unlikely, but it would make the league more fun, and that alone keeps the idea alive.
