Indiana won its first college football national championship with a 27-21 win over Miami on Monday. It was the icing on the cake a perfect 16-0 season for head coach Curt Cignetti and his Hoosiers.

A party broke out across Bloomington late Monday night after Indiana’s win. An Instagram video showed fans celebrating with joy at the famous Bloomington bar Kilroy’s, a popular night spot for college students and Indiana fans.

Indiana football could build a dynasty

The Hoosiers never had much success in football until 2024, when Cinetti arrived. Cignetti led Indiana to College Football Playoff in consecutive seasons. His 16-0 season in 2025, including a Big Ten championship as well as a national championship.

Cygnets he joked after the game that maybe he should just leave training while he’s ahead.

“If I was smart, I probably would have retired, but we need the money,” Cignetti joked early Tuesday morning, according to On3, in a conversation with reporters.

Indiana fans are glad he’s kidding. Since Cignetti’s arrival, the Hoosiers have become one of the best football teams in the Big Ten. That’s pretty amazing considering Indiana football has been on a losing streak overall, without much success before Cignetti came to town.

Indiana fans are hoping Cignetti’s first championship is one of many. The head coach says a lot of people have helped him get to this point.

“I took an unprecedented chance in this business and ended up here,” Cignetti said. “When I took that job (IUP), the goal wasn’t to end up here, but I did. The reason I’m sitting here today, all those things prepared me for this. But the reason I’m sitting here today is because of guys like this (the players surrounding him on the podium), and there are a lot of them in that locker room and a great coaching staff.

“Many of us who have been together a long time.”

Time will tell if Indiana can keep the momentum going. For now, Hoosiers fans have a lot to celebrate.
