Boston cuts Georges Niang trade prior to 2025-26 season
The The Boston Celtics are just a week away starting the 2025-26 NBA season with a home game against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics had a busy offseason, trading Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday as they prepare for (most likely) a full season without injured star Jayson Tatum.
Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks over the summer, with a return package centered around that Georges Niang in a move that was clearly designed to get the Celtics off the second apron. Niang has since been traded to the Utah Jazz and on Wednesday to Boston made a move which refers to one of the pieces they received in that transaction.
“Boston Celtics waive two-way player RJ Lewis, league sources tell @hoopshipe,” reported Michael Scotto of Hoopshipe on X, formerly Twitter. “Boston acquired Lewis from the Utah Jazz in exchange for two second-round picks and George Niang. Lewis was recently the Big East Player of the Year for St. John’s.”
Lewis went undrafted last June before signing with the Jazz and then being traded to Boston. It remains to be seen what his next move will be as far as his NBA future is concerned.
Transition year for the Celtics

Once Jayson Tatum went down with his Achilles in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks last May, it became immediately clear that the 2025-26 season would be lost for the Boston Celtics, at least as far as championship contention was concerned.
The subsequent trades of Holiday and Porzingis further cemented that.
However, the Celtics still employ both Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, each of whom could be in their career years this season, as they shoulder a much larger portion of the offensive load for Boston. The Celtics also have some intriguing young talent on their roster, including Anfernee Simmons, who will be playing on a seemingly competitive team for the first time in his career.
The Celtics are scheduled to open the 2025-26 season against the 76ers on October 22nd at 7:30 PM ET from Boston.
