Brad Brownell isn’t buying the excuse to travel for a stunning loss

Clemson has been one of the best teams in the ACC this year. They opened conference play with six straight wins before the loss. After losing to NC State Head Coach Brad Brownell was honest in his assessment of his team. After four more wins with two on the West Coast, Clemson fell to Virginia Tech 76-66 on Wednesday night.
As he was after the NC State loss, Brownell was honest with the media after the loss, per Derian Carter of the Greenville News.
“It’s not like Clemson came back from the West Coast or anything. We got beat tonight by a good team that outplayed us,” Brownell said. “There are no excuses.”
Clemson beat Stanford on the road on Feb. 4 and then beat Cal on Feb. 7, both West Coast Conference teams. They then return home for this game with Virginia Tech before hitting the road again. Clemson gave up 76 points in the loss, the most they had given up in the regular season since an early December loss to BIU.
“You score 76 points on the Tigers, you’re doing something,” Virginia Tech coach Mike Young said.
The Hokies dominated with three in the game. They hit 11 of 21 attempts, good for 52 percent. Furthermore, they shot 52 percent from the field and hit all 11 of their free throw attempts. Meanwhile, the shots weren’t falling for Clemson. They shot only 45 percent from the field, and 31 percent from three. They also hit just 11 of 18 free throws.
“We had a lot of guys not play well for the first time in a long time,” Brownell said. “Too many different guys don’t play well on the same day. … We’re one of those teams that we need most of our guys to play well.”
Clemson will now look for all of their guys to be firing on all cylinders the next time they take the field. Clemson travels to Duke, one of the best teams in the nation, on Saturday.
