Bristol Flyers: Club coach hopes ‘togetherness’ will lead to victory in SLB trophy final

Bristol Flyers hope their “resilience” and “togetherness” will see them to their first major silverware in the men’s Super League trophy final on Sunday, head coach Andreas Kapulas said.

The Flyers are celebrating their 20th anniversary this season and will play the Newcastle Eagles in front of more than 8,500 fans at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena for the title.

A special edition blue T-shirt was created for Flyers fans to wear to the Finals to mark the occasion.

“It would be an amazing way to mark the anniversary,” Kapulas told BBC Points West.

“I’ve been here since the beginning, through every division, to the highest level, to the European competition. We have celebrated some amazing moments, faced many challenges and are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished.

“You will be able to win the trophy and bring it back to Bristol, it will be right there.

This is the second time Bristol Flyers have reached the final of the Trophy – formerly known as the BBL Trophy. The last time was in 2020, but they were beaten by Worcester Wolves.

The Flyers won three and lost three of their six group games to finish second in the South pool and book a place in the final four of the competition in early December.

They went on to beat Cheshire Phoenix twice in the two legs of the semi-final to book their place in Birmingham this weekend.

Kapulas believes that the team has developed a lot since the last final and is better prepared.

“I think we’re more experienced. I can speak for myself; I know a lot more about what’s expected on the day and the things that prevented us from lifting the cup last time,” Kapulas said.

“We have a resilient group. Entering the final, we just want to be ourselves. The team that managed to reach the final, we want to be that team.”
