Brook Lopez joins elite company with 9 triples

The The Los Angeles Clippers looked healthy when Ivica Zubac went down a Grade 2 left ankle sprain, an injury that kept him out for several weeks. But the Clippers continued to win despite Zubc’s absence; they went 3-0 (including the game in which Zubac injured his ankle) since the 37-year-old Brooke Lopez playing a big part in LA’s mini turnaround.

In particular, Lopez went crazy from beyond the arc on Friday night in a 119-103 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. He drilled nine of his 14 three-point attempts on the night, setting a new career high for most triples made in one game and thus joined some very exclusive company.

As ClutchPoints pointed out, Clippers beat reporter Tomer Azarly, Lopez became only the third player in NBA history age 37 or older to make at least nine 3-pointers in a single game, joining Stephen Curry and LeBron James as the only players to do so.

It’s nothing short of a remarkable turnaround for Lopez as well, who has looked washed out all season amid the Clippers’ struggles. This game, which he finished with 31 points, shows that he has plenty of fuel left in the tank.

Lopez’s 3-pointers kept the Clippers alive in the first half and gave them the lead in the third quarter; he drilled four 3-pointers in the third quarter alone, leaving the Blazers defense helpless.

This was a very good match for Lopez if it rained from deep; he faced Donovan Clingan, who, like him, has suboptimal foot speed and could be used in pick-and-roll situations.

Now the Clippers have won three straight games against respectable opposition. They will be tested, however, on Sunday when they face the Detroit Pistons at home at 9:00 PM ET
