Cam Whitmore’s “day job” is causing concern in Washington

The The Washington Wizards were on the battle bus so far this season, currently 3-19 after a recent home loss at by the hands of the Atlanta Hawks. The Wizards weren’t expected to do well this year, but fans were probably still hoping for something a little more encouraging than what they’ve seen so far.
During the offseason, the Wizards brought Cam Whitmore from the Houston Rockets, hoping the gifted wing can fully blossom with a much bigger role. Until now, this was not the case, and recently, one report illuminated about some potential friction between Whitmore and the Washington organization this early in the season.
“Within the organization, care has been a daily business. Amid a 3-19 start to the season, Washington has emphasized establishing solid practice habits and a consistent approach to its young roster, and Whitmore has not consistently lived up to those expectations,” RG.org’s Grant Afsett reported.
“If you’re trying to establish yourself in the NBA, you have to show up for practice,” one source said, per Offset.
Whitmore has all the tools to be a solid rotation player in the NBA, including elite athleticism as well as a competent perimeter jumper. However, the fact that the character issues that concerned Whitmore heading into the 2023 NBA draft are still showing up doesn’t bode well for his future prospects at the NBA level.
Meanwhile, the Wizards have wandered away this season. CJ McCollum has done his best to increase his trade value in recent weeks, but it remains to be seen if any team would take the bait on that front.
Either way, the Wizards next take the court on Friday night at home against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
