Why the Canucks could cover the spread/win
If ever there was a win to get the group back together and overcome rumors of a possible rift in the Canucks’ locker room, it was their win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. The Leafs have a huge target on their back in Canada, and the Canucks had plenty of motivation to steal a win in Toronto when they met on Hockey Night in Canada. However, Vancouver had flight issues leaving Carolina and did not arrive in Toronto until the morning of the game. They were also on a four-game losing streak, but held on to shut out the high-scoring Maple Leafs. That’s the kind of win Vancouver can turn into a winning streak.
The Canucks may be 1-2-2 in their last five games, but that’s not because of the play of their goalies. Scoring one goal in three games against the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals and Nashville Predators is the catalyst for that record. The goalkeepers, led by Kevin Lankinen, do enough to secure victories. Lankinen and Thatcher Demko combined for a 2.00 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in those five games.
Why the Jets could cover the spread/win
The Jets may have looked good before the recent loss, but their four losses in five games have given cause for concern. It didn’t look like it was going to get any easier when they hosted the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, but Hellebuyck was able to steal a 3-0 victory. It made for an impressive stat for Hellebuick, as it was his sixth shutout of the season. What makes the shutout stat so remarkable is that he also has six shutouts in regulation on the year, giving him as many shutouts as he has at the halfway point of the season.
The biggest question for the Jets is whether their offense can stay hot against the Canucks or if their good goaltending will continue. Winnipeg has scored four or more goals in wins in six games, but has been shut out in the Canucks’ only win in that span.
Canucks-Jets final prediction and pick
The Canucks had a chance to forget all their feuds and just win a hockey game after the adversity they faced coming into Toronto on Saturday night. It was a nice story, but now it’s time for disappointment as the Canucks come back to reality. The Jets aren’t happy about their recent losses and will be building on the momentum of their latest shutout.
