Carmelo Anthony takes a hard look at the NBA without LeBron James

Carmelo Anthony he’s never bitten his tongue, and his latest take on the state of the NBA is as spicy as a vintage “Hoodie Melo” midrange sweater.
On a recent episode of the 7pm Brooklyn Podcast, ex Los Angeles Lakers the star is not only praised his longtime friend LeBron James; he essentially crowned him with the sun around which the entire basketball universe revolves.
“He’s lived long enough to be a bad guy … He’s still holding this league down,” Anthony said of the 41-year-old superstar. “This league doesn’t move without Bron. I don’t care what anybody says. It doesn’t move without Bron.”

That’s a bold claim, but looking at the results this month, it’s hard to argue with the logic. Just last Thursday, February 12, 2026, the King proved Melo’s point on a historic night at the Cripto.com Arena. Given that the Lakers are missing the leading scorer Luka Doncic, I dismantled James Dallas Mavericks in defeat 124-104.
LeBron became the oldest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, with 28 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. He broke the record earlier held by another Lakers legend, Karl Malone, which marked 40 years in 2003.
Mel’s “villain” comment is touching the polarizing nature of LeBron’s longevity. While some fans are eager for the “next generation” to fully take over, James continues to guard the throne. Even with the emergence of the young titans, TV ratings and headlines still peak when No. 23 is on the floor.
The Lakers are currently relying on that “villainous” energy as they navigate their way through a crowded Western Conference. Whether you love the constant coverage of LeBron or are ready for a new era, Anthony’s message is clear: As long as LeBron James is on the line, he’s the engine that keeps the NBA machine humming.
