Catch up with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? For Kevin Durant, that seems a long way off

Kevin DurantReal offensive metronome, Kevin Durant he still averages 26.5 points in the over-37s. That’s how he passed Wilt Chamberlain (31 419 points) Then Dirk Nowitzki (31,560) in the ranking of the best scorers in history, and is currently in 6th place, with 31,736 points on the clock (in the regular season).

At this rate, he should break into the Top 5, and thus progress Michael Jordan (32,292) within twenty meetings. Kobe Bryant (33,643) is achievable next season. And then?

Our colleague Leigh Ellis asked him about the possibility of going to another place in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387). Reducing his average to 25 points per game for the sake of calculation, taking into account the weight of years, it would take “KD” 268 games to pass “KAJ”. That’s three full seasons after this campaign…

“Honestly, I don’t know if I can score 25 points a game for 270 more games” recognizes the Rockets winger. “I never want to say never, but these guys set the bar so high… First, to be in the Top 3/4, you have to play at least twenty years in the NBA. And then you have to stay at that level for 15 to 20 years.”

For Kevin Durant, slowed by injuries throughout his career, this is not the goal.

“I look at it this way: play a long time, play more than twenty years and see where I end up. If I end up there, great. Otherwise, I just want to be there, in the league. That’s always what I wanted when I was a kid: to be in the NBA. So to still be here twenty years later … that’s always huge. Everything else I wanted. Honestly, I always wanted. I wanted to be among the greatest, I wanted to be talked about in a historical context, but when I put my head down and I do, I’m most excited to still be in the NBA, and to continue to do what I’m doing.
