Channing Frie unloads on Deandre Ayton over Clint Capela’s remark

Deandre Ayton has been making waves recently when he expressed his frustrations about his role for Los Angeles Lakers. He has been heard saying that the Lakers are turning him into “Clint Capela,” as if that in itself is a bad thing.

Looks like yes Ayton wants a bigger role in the Lakers offense instead of being relegated to a roll man/diva option for the likes of Luka Doncic, Austin Reeves and LeBron James. But Ayton hasn’t shown nearly enough consistency to warrant that kind of involvement in the Lakers’ offense.

Capella knew his role from day one and tried to be the best version of himself that he could. And from the perspective of retired big man Channing Frye, he urged the Lakers center to do the same in the fiery chatter on the Road Trippin’ Show.

“Deandre Ayton is a master of nothing. In what world do I throw Deandre Ayton the basketball when I have fucking Austin Reaves, LeBron and Luke. Stop it. You’re going to get JJ Redick fired. Who’s running those plays? When have you seen consistency from a man? You’ve never seen it. So he doesn’t want me to be.” Yeah, heck, he averaged a double-double most of his career,” Frye said.

Ayton’s offensive game hasn’t developed enough for him to be a consistent option night in and night out for the Lakers. He might be better off trying to help the Lakers win as much as he can instead of trying to do it his way.

The 27-year-old big man has thrived on winning teams in the past, as he was the starting center for a team that was two wins away from winning the title. So it’s not like he doesn’t know what it takes to win. Maybe it’s time to look in the mirror and accept that he might not be “him”.
