Charlotte is letting go of its athletic director after 7 years



The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, also known as the 49ers, is making big changes to its athletic program. With Charlotte’s football team struggling with a 1-5 record and a last-place basketball team going into the 2024-25 campaign, the program appears to be firing its athletic director.

Mike Hill, who was the athletic director of the Charlotte 49ers for seven years, is be releasedaccording to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The 57-year-old former athletic director is now available to sign with another school if he chooses.

“Charlotte announces that Mike Hill is out as athletic director. He was the athletic director there for seven years.”

Hill just signed a contract extension for four years 2024, according to Chris Venini of The Athletic. Charlotte has released an official statement about her decision to release Mike Hill.

“Over the past seven years, Mike has led our athletic department with deep commitment, said Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “He has been instrumental in many important advancements for our athletic department, including the move to the American Conference. His hiring of head football coach Tim Albin also set us on a path to success. We deeply appreciate Mike’s service, dedication and contributions and We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

It said Josh Humphrey, who is vice chancellor for institutional integrity and general counsel, will step in as interim athletic director until Charlotte hires a new one. The 49ers athletic program will likely begin conducting a thorough search as soon as possible.
