Chris Paul vs. Tyronn Lue feud at center of sudden split

Chris Paul released by the Los Angeles Clippers in the middle of the night early Wednesday was a shock to everyone in the NBA. No one knew exactly why the move was made days after the Clippers honored Paul with a video on their floor for his final season, but more details have since emerged about why the decision was made.
The 40-year-old guard made the decision to play out his final season in the league in Los Angeles and immediately took on the role of vocal leader behind the scenes. Paul often challenged players, coaches and management on certain matters during the Clippers’ struggles, something that he didn’t sit well with the head coach Tyronn Lueaccording to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Paul and the way he held those in the organization accountable clashed with Lue, and the team felt like his actions became “disruptive,” according to Charania. As a result, Lue and Paul didn’t speak to each other for weeks.
More details also surfaced Wednesday afternoon, as NBA Insider Chris Haynes reported that Paul had requested a meeting with Lue to discuss “allegations of a negative presence on the team.” Lue never followed through on this request, and team president Lawrence Frank traveled from Los Angeles to Atlanta before Wednesday to personally inform Paul that he would no longer be with the team.
When the Clippers made the decision to part ways with Paul, the following statement Frank gave ClutchPoints’ Tomer Azarly:
“We are parting ways with Chris and he will no longer be with the team. We will work with him on the next step in his career. Chris is a legendary Clipper who has had a historic career. I want to make one thing very clear. Nobody blames Chris for our poor performance. I accept responsibility for the record we have right now. There are many reasons why we made a big impact on Chris. franchise.”
Whether the Clippers will trade or end up releasing Paul is an open question after the news of his departure Wednesday morning. Paul cannot be traded until Dec. 15 after signing with the Clippers in free agency last summer.
In 16 appearances this season, Paul averaged 2.9 points, 3.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game while shooting 32.1 percent from the floor.
Paul already is announced his intention to retire in 2026.
