CJ Gardner-Johnson explains Jackson Dart’s forced fumble

With Chicago Bears dealing with numerous secondary injuries, franchise turned to free agent CJ Gardner-Johnson. In their 24-20 win over the New York Giants in Week 10, that the supplement proved crucial.

The Giants appeared to be in full control, up 17-7 heading into the fourth quarter. But then Gardner-Johnson forced a fumble by Giants quarterback Jackson Dart. The Bears would go on to kick a field goal.

Of course, Gardner-Johnson was trying to give his Bears some momentum. But the quarterback had another reason wanted to make Dart fumble, via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin.

“I got tired of him running the ball,” Gardner-Johnson said. “No disrespect. It’s just aggravating when he makes a 20-yard, 50-yard break and you’re playing great coverage. So I had to find a way to get off the field to eventually get the ball out of his hands.”

Dart ended up leaving the game with a concussion. But before he went down, he rushed six times for 66 yards and two touchdowns. His longest run was a 24-yard scamper that seemed to set the tone for the contest.

But the Bears were able to lock in when it mattered most. They scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and stole the win from the Giants.

Still, Gardner-Johnson and company know they can’t let any quarterback or punter rush them like Dart. They did a solid job in the first half with Tyrone Tracy. But he finished with 71 yards on 14 carries.

Chicago will look to increase the pressure on defense, and Gardner-Johnson will retain his key role.
