Cody Rhodes drops a cryptic “first time” tease since John Cena’s last match
First time since John Cena’s last match, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the issue.
Rhodes took to X on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, to cryptically tease something to come. “First time since last time,” he wrote. “Stay tuned… (eyes and lightning bolts emoji)”
He posted a picture of Cena’s sneakers, bracelets and armband lying in the ring after the 17-time world champion lost his last match in a teasing match. This was a symbolic gesture that marked the end of Cena’s career, leaving behind his signature gear in the ring.
Fans will have to wait and see where this leads. Rhodes stood near the ring some time after Cena’s last match ended. So it obviously meant a lot to him.
Cody Rhodes was a big part of John Cena’s WWE farewell tour
While Cena only faced a limited number of Superstars during his farewell tour, he did take on Rhodes twice during his WWE farewell tour.
They first faced off at WrestleMania 41, where Cena won his record 17th World Championship. Cena turned after winning the Elimination Chamber match, attacking Rhodes.
Rhodes’ first WWE Undisputed Championship reign ended at WrestleMania 41, but he would receive a rematch a few months later. Rhodes and Cena faced off in the main event of SummerSlam PLE 2025. “The American Nightmare” defeated Cena, regaining the WWE Undisputed Championship.
He has held the belt ever since. Currently, Rhodes is feuding with Drew McIntyre, who has been chasing the championship for years.
Rhodes was in the main event on Saturday night where Cena’s final match took place. He opened the show by facing NKST Champion Oba Femi in an exhibition match, which ended in a disqualification due to McIntyre’s interference.
He then returned after Cena’s last match ended. Rhodes and CM Punk put their championship belts over Cena’s shoulder. Rhodes is now WWE’s biggest babyface and Cena is gone.
