Cody Williams makes brutal NBA history with a 55-point loss to the Hornets

On Saturday night, Utah Jazz suffered one of its most embarrassing losses in franchise history with a 150-95 shellacking of hands of the Charlotte Hornets. Although they played without several key parts, including star Lauri Markkanenthat still wasn’t much of an excuse for a 55-point loss to a Hornets team that is currently 14-25 in the 2025-26 NBA season.
From a distance, Jazz wing Cody Williams appeared to have a relatively solid game in this game, scoring 15 points with two rebounds. However, Williams did some unfortunate NBA history posting a plus-minus of -60, the worst in 30 years of tracking, according to BasketNews, via Hoopshipe.
The previous record of -58 was shared by two players.
Overall, plus-minus can be a misleading stat and is generally taken with a grain of salt, but it still wasn’t a great sign for Williams to be on the wrong end of that piece of NBA trivia.
Things basically fell apart from tip-off on Saturday night for the Jazz, with Utah trailing 39-8 early in the first quarter, and somehow things only got worse.
The Jazz were better in each quarter, and their effort level didn’t improve in the slightest as the game wore on.
All in all, it’s been a rough couple of years for the Jazz since they traded Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert in the 2022 offseason, with the team failing to make the playoffs and suffering through some ugly performances since then, but Saturday’s lackluster effort against the Hornets may have just taken the team to a new level.
Either way, the Jazz will look to get back on track when they hit the road Monday night to take on Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 19:00 EST from Cleveland.
