Earlier, the NCAA approved a measure that would have allowed college athletes to bet on sports such as the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and NHL on Nov. 1, but there have been delays in passing the measure. The the latest decision it takes that option away from college athletes.
One of the arguments behind preventing peers from betting on professional sports is that many of the top professional athletes came out of college and recently. As a result, college and professional athletes can have ongoing ties, and anything that puts college sports at risk in the public eye is clearly something that The NCAA wants to avoid.
A simple question like “how are you feeling” from a college athlete to a professional player can be seen as obtaining information about the status of an injury. When that question is about another player who isn’t even present, alarm bells can go off in the minds of those who want to see if the players are looking for insider information.
The multitude of gambling sites makes it difficult to keep track
Many legitimate sports gambling sites do not want to take bets from any NCAA athletes because they want to avoid the appearance of any impropriety. These sites want to protect their own reputation and prevent the public from thinking that any event can be influenced by outside influencers.
While a famous college athlete wouldn’t be able to bet while using their name, there’s nothing to stop a so-called friend from betting on that athlete.
