Cooper Flag reveals extent of thumb injury after loss to Bucks
The Dallas Mavericks may have dropped to 3-8 on the season after suffering a 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night, but at the very least, their prized rookie, Cooper Flagg appears to be taking the next step in his career. Flagg scored a game-high 26 points with nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block while shooting 60 percent from the field on 15 attempts.
This is it the kind of play that Flagg was expected to make consistently to start his young career, which, regardless of how talented he is, was an unfair expectation to begin with. Regardless, for him to start putting up these kind of well-rounded stats while playing with an injury should be nothing short of a feat.
Flagg suffered a sprained thumb Monday night and his right thumb was heavily taped, he revealed during postgame presser just how hard this injury actually is.
“It’s OK. It happened (on) one of the plays in the last game. I was attacking the rim and trying to dunk. It was a little bit off the rim. Little sprain, sprained thumb. Nothing too crazy. Look, I was able to get through it tonight. I’m probably going to stick a thumb obvious oh, but I’m an ‘obvious, sore’ thumb. nothing crazy,” Flagg said, via ClutchPoints Mavericks beat reporter Joey Mistretta.

It’s not entirely clear if the injury will linger for the next few days and require Flagg to miss time. But it’s very promising that he not only managed to overcome the injury, but also managed to have the best game of his NBA career to this point.
Mavericks to pair Cooper Flagg with award-winning 2026 rookie?

Competing for a playoff spot appears to be a long shot for this Mavericks team. They’re already 3-8, and it’s not entirely clear when Anthony Davis, Derek Lively II and Kyrie Irving will return.
The a smart move for the Mavs could be a tankhopefully another top pick (to chase someone like Darrin Peterson, AJ Dibantsa or Cameron Boozer) to pair with Flagg.
