Cooper Flagg admits to point guard debacle
Cooper Flagg has already become one of the brightest spots in the difficult opening of the month for Dallas Mavericks. The rookie forward has taken on minutes, responsibilities and late-game assignments that most first-year players never experience. His production increased, and his poise impressed teammates and coaches. However, after a demanding stretch that included a doubleheader loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Flagg made the confession it brought clarity to one of the Mavericks’ most pressing concerns.
He admitted that he was not ready to be the primary point guard.
Flagg said the first few weeks forced him into a role that required constant decision-making, ball control and pressure relief. He said the workload doesn’t match where he is in his development. He added that returning to his natural position allowed him to simplify his reads and play with better rhythm.
“Being a point guard comes with a lot of responsibility,” Flagg said. “I don’t know if I was ready for it right away. That doesn’t mean I can’t get back at it or improve … but lately it’s better to have someone else help with the pressure.”
The Mavericks put the burden on Cooper Flagg

The Mavericks started the season weak at guard. They asked Flagg to create shoulders in addition to scoring, rebounding and defense. At just eighteen years old, he was still averaging over fifteen points per game while defending veterans and shooting late. His sense of the game, his physicality and ability to remain calm under pressure kept him on the floor at every critical moment.
The problem for Dallas isn’t his performance. It is a burden that is placed on him.
His comments were in line with growing calls for more traditional aid in the hinterland. D’Angelo Russell offered more consistent playmaking in limited minutes. His presence helped Flagg find cleaner angles and more decisive drives. Head coach Jason Kidd he praised the rookie for handling the pressure with unusual composure, but admitted that the team must support him with better structure and spacing.
The Mavericks got off to a rough start and struggled to finish close games. Even so, Flagg emerged as a sign of long-term stability. His confession about the play situation served as a reminder. Dallas sees a potential star. Now he must protect that growth with a clearer plan.
