Cooper Flagg celebrates the Mavericks’ first win
Defeated by Spurs and the Wizards, the Mavs finally got their first win last night, their third game in a row at home. It still took a three-quarter fight to shake off an attractive Toronto team that had long given Jason Kidd’s troops problems, especially with Scotty Barnes’ 33 points alone.
Dallas then eventually made the difference, with its leaders, D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Davis in the lead (24 and 25 points), its “roles” and the played Cooper Flagg, who delighted the American Airlines Center with 22 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Toronto did not come as a victim and sold its skin dearly. The first half showed that, and the Raptors are even +2 at the break (64-66). The Canadians did not look down in the third quarter, responding to every offensive of the home team and took a lead of 7 points (69-76)! And then everything changed. First, Anthony Davis scored four baskets in a row, and Dallas took a 13-0 lead after Cooper Flagg’s big dunk on Sandro Mamukelasvili to finally pull away (95-85).

The hard part was done, even if it took all the vigilance of PJ Washington and D’Angelo Russell to definitively outplay Toronto and secure a 139-129 win. The Mavs will be able to take a deep breath before moving on, starting tonight against OKC, still at home. At the same time, the Raptors will be expected on the Spurs floor.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– Cooper Flag flights. His overall performance was very good. Everything the rookie does, he does well, whether it’s finishing or making his teammates shine, always in the best interest of the team. And when he puts on a show, it’s his match of the night! Special mention for his move in traffic before sending Derek Lively II into the stars, and of course his thunderous dunk in transition on Sandro Mamukelaashvili that put an exclamation point on the biggest highlight of the night for Dallas.
– The third quarter. Because that’s the moment when everything changed. Paradoxically, while Toronto was good in the matchup, 8 points in a row by Anthony Davis, followed by a 13-0 run in favor of the Texans, finally freed Dallas, who finished with more confidence to finally distance themselves. Offensively, it’s easily the best quarter for J-Kidd’s men since the start of the season (39-25).
– Roles of the Mavs. Thanks to them, Dallas went the distance and will be able to have ambitions this season. From PJ Washington to Max Christie (17 points each) to Naji Marshall and Klay Thompson, everyone had their highlights that followed the Russell-Flag-Davis trio.
– Raptors resistance. We will have to deal with this five Quickley-Barrett-Ingram-Barnes-Poeltl! Even if there is no victory in the end, Toronto surprised (again) with the quality of its basketball and its ability to resist these Mavs. What can this team hope for in the East? We’ll soon find out…
