Cooper Flagg draws a modest rookie projection from the relievers

Doc Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg was impressive in his first NBA win of his career, the basketball world is wondering what his stat line might look like by the end of the season. With Flagg looks special for the Mavericks against the Toronto Raptors in a 139-129 win, the team’s assistant coach talked about potential expectations that would be productive for the team.

ESPN’s Tim MacMahon was on “The Hoop Collective” podcast and said he spoke with a Dallas assistant coach who mentioned that if Flagg averaged 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists, plus added his defensive ability, it’s a solid new year. Especially for a talent like Flagg, who turns 19 in December, the sky’s the limit for the Duke product.

“I talked to the Mavs assistant,” MacMahon said. “And they basically said, ‘Hey, if Cooper ends up averaging fourteen, seven, six and plays defensively like he did, then it’s going to be a really, really good rookie season for a kid who doesn’t turn 19 until, I think December.

“The fact that he’s already a solid starter in the NBA at this age is remarkable,” McMahon continued. “I just think I would expect him as a point guard, in a position he’s never played, to consistently put up big numbers and lead the way, like that’s a lot to ask.”

As Flagg set new career highs with the Mavericks in the Raptors’ win, he would score a total of 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, along with four rebounds and four assists. Playing the point guard role for Dallas early on, he still showed his explosiveness, as well as a dunk that had the basketball world buzzing.

“When he gets the crowd going like that, our team feeds off that,” D’Angelo Russell he said via ESPN. “When he acts like that, it’s contagious.”

There’s no denying that Flagg already looks like the talent he was made for, settling into his new role.

“It feels great. I’m excited,” Flagg said. “We want to build tonight, use that as a foundation. This team just needs to keep building and getting better.”

Either way, Flagg and the Mavericks look to keep the momentum going in their next game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.
