Cooper Flagg gets the injury report, but there is a promising catch

On Tuesday morning, The Dallas Mavericks fan base finally got it what he longs for — the firing of CEO Nick Harrison. Harrison set the Mavericks on this Luka Doncic-less path with his foolish decision to replace their franchise cornerstone, and now they’re struggling to a 3-8 start to the new campaign. The only silver lining in all of this is that the Mavs got another potential franchise-changing star in a rookie Cooper Flagg after winning the 2025 NBA draft lottery despite strong odds (1.8 percent) of doing so.

Flagg has endured some struggles to start his NBA career, but seems to be coming into his own. He scored a career-high 26 points in a 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday, and even set a record rivaled only by LeBron James in the process — all while playing through a sprained thumb.

The The Mavericks rookie has already downplayed the injury of his, saying it shouldn’t be anything too serious. And the organization seems to agree with him. Flagg may be on the injury report with a sprained thumb, but he’ll be there available to play when they face the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, according to the latest report on NBA.com.

Flagg’s development will be paramount to the Mavericks moving forward. He will be hailed as the team’s savior, as the one to pull them out of the trenches after the inexplicable Doncic trade, and it seems his time is now.

With Harrison out, a fresh start should be what is expected for the Mavericks. The denial phase should be over; they messed up by trading away Doncic for the even more injury-prone Anthony Davis, and all they had to do was move forward with their new core.

But it might be best for Mavs to simply play for lottery odds next year. The 2026 NBA draft class looks stacked, especially at the top, and pairing one of those hyped prospects with Flagg could be their way out of this post-Doncic trade mess.
