Cooper Flagg reacts to the Hornets’ loss after a 49-point masterclass

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks they were defeated by the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night, losing by a final score of 123-121. Cooper Flagg set a new career high for points scored in a game with a grade of 49. Flagg accomplished the feat on 20-29 shooting from the field and 3-5 shooting from behind the arc. He too set a new career record for points scored in a half with 25, something he achieved in the first half of the competition.

Flagg played well, but he is a first team player. He is not one to celebrate a great individual performance in defeat. Flagg talked about defeat after the game.

“It’s tough,” Flagg told reporters. “We fight the whole game. We play really hard, stick together even though there were a lot of tough things. They went for a lot of runs. We hung in there, gave ourselves a chance to win the series, so it’s tough. Obviously you want to get the win, but also a lot of positives to take away.”

It was a great game for Flagg, but the Mavs ended up scoreless. Flegg’s primary Rookie of the Year competition and former Duke teammate Knuppel could Charlotte led the way with 34 points. The starters looked like superstars throughout the game. It’s easy to see why Flagg and Knueppel went to the Rising Stars game.

However, Cooper Flagg and the Mavs suffered a tough loss. However, head coach Jason Kidd believes Flagg has what it takes to become a “champion” one day.

“He’s not about numbers, he’s about wins and losses. That’s who he is. He competes to win. . . . For a young man who thinks like that, he’s going to be a champion sooner rather than later. He keeps working. For him to be out (with an injury) and then to be able to come back with this type of play. . . . He’s just in the race for his team.”

The Mavs’ next game is Saturday night in Houston against the Rockets. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 PM EST.
