Dallas delivered a brutal injury update to Derek Lively II

Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis could soon return from injurybut the team got worrisome Derek Lively II update on Tuesday. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Lively could miss significant time due to a foot injury.

More from Dallas: Mavs fear extended injury layoff for Derek Lively II, @TheSteinLine has learned,” Stein wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Hold out Monday in Miami with a right leg injury, Lively played in seven of 19 games after offseason foot surgery and a recent knee problem.”

Lively is dealing with injury problems during his time in the NBA. He has potential and the Mavs would love to see him play a role alongside Cooper Flagg for years to come, but his injury concerns have limited his time on the floor.

The 21-year-old played 55 games during his rookie season in 2023-24. Last year, the big man appeared in a total of 36 games. So far in the 2025-26 campaign, Lively has played in seven competitions. With the Mavericks center potentially set to play through an “extended injury layoff,” Dallas will need to find other answers at the position.

Both Davis and Daniel Gafford have dealt with their own injuries this year. Gafford is currently available while Davis hopes to return soon. Dallas will certainly need both players with Lively out.

More information on Lively’s injury status will be released as it becomes available. The Mavericks next game is at 10:00 PM EST in Los Angeles against the Lakers on Friday night.
