Daniss Jenkins sends the Wizards game into OT with a wild buzzer-beating 3

The Detroit Pistons were the second nights of back-to-back games, and even though this game was against the lowly Washington Wizards, it was always going to be a tough game given how lowly they were. Even Cade Cunningham, who put up Kobe Bryant-esque stats (46 points on 45 attempts) the night he suffered fear of injury late in the fourth quarter, they needed help if they were going to hold off this relatively rested Wizards team.

In regulation, that is exactly what happened. The Pistons had already gotten some help from the Wizards, with Keyshon George missing a free throw that would have put Washington up four. This then kept the score at 127-124, giving Detroit a chance to tie the game on the final possession of the fourth.

The play call was originally for Duncan Robinson, although the Pistons’ play was stopped after Jalen Duren, the linebacker, fell to the ground. Cunningham, the inbounder, then had to think fast. He then took a pass toward the corner right into the arms of sophomore guard Dennis Jenkins, who fired the shot without hesitation. Jenkins then continued to drill the biggest hit of his life to this point to send the game into overtime, emerging as the hero on a night when the Pistons needed him.

This was just the 13th game of Jenkins’ NBA career, and he had a night. Before rallying the Pistons in an eventual 137-135 overtime victory, Jenkins poured in 16 points in the fourth to keep them alive just as the Wizards threatened to pull away. And given the Pistons’ backcourt injury woes, there’s no better time for the young guard to step up. (He finished with 24 points in the win.)

It looked like the Pistons would slip on a banana peel in the second game of the back-to-back. But Cunningham wasn’t about to let that happen. He returned from a serious coccyx injury scare and did everything he could to put Detroit in a winning position, posting a triple-double with 46 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists.

The Pistons can rest now, and their next game is Wednesday night against the Chicago Bulls.
