Darius Garland hints at return from toe injury — ‘I’m pretty close’

As expected, Cleveland Cavaliers started the season without Darius Garlandwho is still recovering from surgery on his left toe. The Cavaliers will have to hold down the fort without their shifty point guard for a few more weeks as the team approaches him cautiously.

The Cavaliers lost to the New York Knicks119-111, at Madison Square Garden.

After being down 15 points at halftime, the Cavaliers came back in the third quarter. They outscored the Knicks 37-22 and tied the score 87-87 going into the final frame. The Knicks, however, regained control and eventually won.

Cleveland sorely missed Garland’s productivity on both ends. But the 25-year-old playmaker said it could be back to the hardwood really soon, confirming Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson’s earlier remark.

“I have a date in my head. I’m not going to say a date right now, but I’m pretty close,” Garland said during an interview with ESPN’s Lisa Salters.

“I feel really good. I’m playing live again in training, I’m playing five-on-five against the team, I’m working out every day, I’m moving, so everything’s going well.”

The former All-Star suffered a left toe injury in the first round of the playoffs against the Miami Heat. He tried to work through it in the second round against the Indiana Pacers, answering in three games, but his mobility was clearly compromised.

He underwent surgery in June, and team doctors estimated a recovery period of four to five months before returning to basketball activities.

Cavaliers too played without De’Andre Hunter against the Knicks due to a knee injury.
