Darren Waller explained that his exit meeting with former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel was routine at first. “My exit date was that Thursday morning,” he said. “And he’s like, he definitely wants you back next year. And we’re just thinking about the year.” Then the tone instantly changed. “Stephen Ross kicked the door down,” Waller recalled. “He comes in and joins the conversation … then the conversation kind of falls away.”

The moment quickly turned awkward. Dolphins TE recalls it openly: “Stephen Ross was standing there looking at me like he wanted me out of the room. Waller looked at McDaniel. McDaniel said, ‘We’ll finish this conversation later.’

At the time, Waller left without realizing what was happening. “I didn’t know the GM search was in full swing,” he said. “I didn’t know what they were talking about the big deal.” Instead, he went downstairs. He tried to reset himself for a moment. “I go out on a date, go downstairs and get a massage,” Waller said.

Moments later, reality hit the Dolphins. “I’m coming from a massage, check my phone,” he said. “He got fired. I’m like, damn, this shit is cold.”
