Darrin Peterson will be re-evaluated on Friday due to his recent injury

Kansas freshman guard Darrin Peterson is in contention for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.but until now, Jayhawks fans were left wondering when they would see the future NBA player on the court again. Darrin Peterson was dealing with a hamstring injury it kept him sidelined for the last six games, but he did set for re-evaluation on Friday, according to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.

According to Kansas head coach Bill Self, a re-evaluation of Darin Peterson on Friday may determine whether he can return from the injury in time for the Jayhawks’ big game next week on Tuesday, Dec. 2 against UConn, Norlander was told. Self also noted that the freshman guard is doing everything he can to get back on the field.

Peterson has only played in two games so far for Kansas, logging only about 25 minutes per game. He averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks while shooting 60 percent from the field, 50 percent from the 3-point line and 77.8 percent from the free throw line.

Even before the 2025-26 NCAA season began, Peterson was among a small handful of players who staked their claim to be the top overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft. That short list includes BIU forward AJ Dibantsa and Duke forward Cameron Boozer.

This season, Kansas is looking to achieve more success in the postseason as they have not advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament in the last three seasons. It wasn’t that long ago that Kansas won the 2021-22 national championship.
