Denver cuts luxury tax with Nets trade that opens up roster spot

Amid earlier reports that The Denver Nuggets were looking to move Hunter Tyson until the trade deadline until gain under the luxury taxthe the team did just that, sending Tyson to the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN’s Shams Charani.
In addition to Hunter Tyson, the Nuggets are also sending a 2032 second-round pick in a trade with the Nets. In return, the Nuggets will receive a less favorable second round pick between the LA Clippers and the Atlanta Hawks for this upcoming draft.
Aside from simply taking shelter under the luxury tax, the trade opened up a roster spot for the Nuggets is used to convert Spencer Jones’ two-way contract to a standard deal, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. Jones has been a solid contributor to the team all season and has come close to making the most of his two-way ability.
After going undrafted in the 2024 NBA draft, Jones was accepted by the Nuggets via a two-way contract. He played sparingly as a rookie, but has become a regular in the team’s rotation this season. He has appeared in 46 games this season, including 34 starts, logging just over 23 minutes per game. In a two-way deal, Jones was limited to just 50 active NBA games, so he was dangerously close to using up his days.
Jones averaged a season-high 6.0 points and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 50.5 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from the 3-point line and 62.2 percent from the 3-point line.
The Nuggets are currently the 3rd seed in the Western Conference standings with a record of 33-19.
