Derrick Jones Jr. denies mid-range jumper Paolo Banchero
Derrick Jones Jr. was a solid contribution for the Los Angeles Clippers since returning from an MCL injury that sidelined him for more than a month.
It’s no coincidence that the Clippers have played well in recent weeks, even with the departure of James Harden at the trade deadline. Jones has been a big part of their rise, providing a two-way activity.
Early against the Orlando Magic on Sunday at the Intuit Dome, Jones showed again why he is an indispensable part of the roster. Paolo Banchero briefly ran down Jones after receiving a screen from Wendell Carter Jr. Jones, however, he recovered quickly to block Buncher’s jump shot.
The Clippers got the ball back, which led to Kobe Sanders’ breakaway dunk.

On one play, Jones showed off his agility, leaping ability and high IQ. Many would have simply given up after losing their pick, but the power forward refused to do so.
It’s that kind of effort that has kept the 29-year-old Jones in the NBA. In his early seasons, he was known only as a dunker. He barely had time to play. Still, he worked on his game, developing an outside shot to become a serviceable 3-and-D guy.
Over the years, his role has increased, becoming a key part of the Dallas Mavericks during their run to the 2024 NBA Finals.
He was a the perfect complement to Kawhi Leonardsince he does not need the ball to make the shot.
In their two games since the All-Star break, excluding their matchup against the Magic, Jones has averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks.
