Derrick White doesn’t see himself as a star or role player

While Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown Boston Celtics‘ star players, Derrick White has emerged as one of the team’s most consistent players. White had some great performances though during his tenure with the Celtics so far, the performances have been stellar.
But does Derrick White see his role with the Celtics as that of a star or a player? During a recent episode of his show, ‘The White Noise Podcast with Derrick White,’ White talked about how his role with the Celtics could change from game to game.
“I think there’s a big gap between star and role player, and there’s really no middle ground,” White said. “I’m just trying to do whatever. Some games I might just be a player, some games I might need to get 30. Some people, they’re like role players, you’re not going to ask them to get 30. So I want to be somebody who can do a little bit of everything.”
The No. 29 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, White is now in his fourth full season with the Celtics. The San Antonio Spurs traded him to Boston before the 2021-22 NBA trade deadline. White played a major role during the Celtics’ 2024 championship run.
This season, White continued to play a major role amid Tatum’s injury as the Celtics surprised many as one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. He appeared in 39 games, with just over 34 minutes per game. He averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks on 39.4 percent shooting from the field, 32.8 percent from the 3-point line and 88.8 percent from the free throw line.
