Desmond Bain breaks his silence on Grizzlies closing in on Ja Morant trade

Orlando Magic star guardian Desmond Bane addressed swirl trade rumors surrounding former Memphis Grizzlies teammate Ja Morant as the two teams prepare for back-to-back contests in Europe as part of the NBA Global Games Series. The The Magic and Grizzlies meet on Thursday at 2:00 PM ET in Berlin on Prime Video, with the second leg scheduled for Sunday at 12:00 PM ET.

Bayne, who was traded last summer and now helps lead the 22-18 Magic, spoke with Joe Vardon of The Athletic about Morant’s situation and speculation that Memphis could be approaching a blockbuster decision.

“Embrace anyone who has that kind of spotlight or something with it,” Bain said.

“He just wants to play basketball and be in a place where he feels valued. And hopefully, if it doesn’t happen in Memphis, he gets that, wherever his next stop is.”

Morant, a two-time All-Star and former NBA MVP, has been the subject of extensive trade talk following the Grizzlies’ torrid start to the season. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported last Friday that the organization began to consider trade offers for the guard as the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline approaches.

“For the first time, the Memphis Grizzlies are receiving offers to potentially move two-time All-Star Ja Morant before the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline, sources tell ESPN,” Charania wrote.

While neither Morant nor Grizzlies officials have publicly commented on the report, questions about Morant’s future have followed the team through recent losses and internal friction. The Grizzlies, who entered their European sweep at 17-22, have struggled to maintain consistency, and the possibility of trading Morant — long considered unlikely by some analysts — now seems more realistic.

Despite the ongoing speculation, Morant’s immediate focus in Memphis remains on the field. He missed the team’s last few games with a right groin problem, but Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo offered some hopeful news regarding Morant’s availability for the match in Berlin.

“We don’t want to comment on random internet reports,” Iisalo said. “He’s progressing in practice. He’s already able to do many parts of practice, so he looks to be progressing (toward playing) well.”

Pressed that Morant would play on Thursday, Iisalo said:
“There is a chance that he will play in global games.”

Morant’s potential return adds an intriguing wrinkle to a series of games that serve as part of the NBA’s efforts to expand its global footprint. The Grizzlies will also face the Magic again in London on Sunday, offering teams and fans in Europe two chances to see American professional basketball at the highest level.

For Bane, the focus remains on competing and supporting players navigating the pressures of professional basketball. His comments highlighted both a connection to Morant’s journey and an understanding that the business side of the league can bring uncertainty to even its biggest stars.

As both the Magic and Grizzlies prepare for their international victory, the Morant story continues to evolve, with the specter of a trade looming as the deadline nears and each game becoming more important to both the franchise and the player’s future.
