Desmond Bain is sent off after throwing the ball at Onyek Okongwu

Tensions flared during Orlando Magicgame against the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday resulting in expulsion Desmond Bane. Bane was trying to compete with the Hawks big man Mr. Okongwu‘s shot to the rim, when he grabbed Okongwu by the arms and threw him to the floor as he then threw the ball at Okongwu. Bane was assessed a flagrant foul, a technical foul and was sent off after a review.

Desmond Bain threw in the third quarter, and the Magic trailed the Hawks by double digits. Mouhamed Gueie came to the defense of Onyeka Okongwu, getting in Bane’s face as teammates and officials intervened before the situation could get out of hand.

Bane finished the game with nine points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in just over 22 minutes of play. He shot 2-of-6 from the field, 2-of-4 from the three-point line and 3-of-5 from the free throw line before being ejected.

The Magic paid a big price to acquire Bane in the offseason, trading four future first-round picks and a trade of first-round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies along with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony. The prevailing thought was an an established guard like Bane could help Magic take another step forward in the Eastern Conference.

So far, the Magic have started the 2025-26 season 3-4 and will fall to 3-5 after a likely loss to the Hawks. Entering Tuesday’s game, Bane had appeared in all seven games for the Magic with only about 30 minutes per game.

He averaged 14.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 41.9 percent from the field, 25.8 percent from the three-point line and 94.1 percent from the free throw line. The No. 30 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Bain is in his sixth season in the NBA and his first with the Magic after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Grizzlies.
