Detroit brings veteran pitcher back to minor league contract

The Detroit Tigers continued to shape their pitching depth ahead of the 2026 season by returning a familiar arm to a low-risk job. By adding a reliable left-handed option, the move subtly increases roster depth while reaffirming the organization’s emphasis on adaptability.
The Tigers have reached an agreement with pitcher Brian Sammons on a minor league contract that includes an off-the-roster invitation to major league camp. Sammons, who played for Tigers In 2024, he returns to the team after spending the 2025 season abroad, providing the club with a reliable asset with additional international experience.
The signing is in line with the club’s broader strategy of stockpiling options for veterans capable of filling multiple roles over the course of a long season. Sammons is not a power arm, but he relies on command, movement and sequencing. He works with a five-pitch mix that allows him to effectively manage lineups, whether he’s dealing with long relief or as a starter.
This versatility is especially useful for a Tigers coaching staff that emphasizes depth and adaptability in matchups. Sammons’ familiarity with the organization further minimizes the acclimation period during camp, allowing him to immediately compete for a role without a significant learning curve.
The reunion was confirmed by Jon Heyman of the New York Post Sports on X (formerly known as Twitter), outlining the structure agreement and the return of the south to the Tigers after the season abroad.
“Brian Sammons signs minors with Tigers. Gets MLB invite in spring. LHP was with Chiba Lotte last year after being Tiger in 2024,” Heyman wrote.
During his previous stint in Detroit, Sammons posted a 3.62 ERA in 27.1 innings, showing he could handle major league hitters in a long relief role. While playing in Japan, he logged more than 85 innings with steady results, further demonstrating durability and flexibility in a different competitive environment.
If Sammons does not make the Day 1 roster, he is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Toledo as both bullpen and rotation depth. The signing gives the Tigers a low-risk way to maintain roster flexibility while keeping a reliable left-hander available through the 2026 season.
