Detroit has designated ‘watch team’ for Michael Porter Jr., but there’s a catch

The The Detroit Pistons were playing some great basketball so far in the 2025-26 NBA season, recently got back into the win column with a big victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Detroit is currently the top seed in the Eastern Conference, strong even as the New York Knicks have picked up speed of late.

With the Eastern Conference seemingly wide open this year, some fans have wondered if the Pistons might be willing to trade some of their future assets in search of a player who can help them win right now.

Recently, NBA insider Jake Fisher reported on an interesting name that could help Detroit in the trade market: the Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr.

“Another team to watch when it comes to Porter, league sources say, is Detroit,” Fisher reported on Marc Stein’s Substack.

Porter Jr. had a career year in the rebuilding Nets, averaging more than 25 points per game at elite efficiency. Meanwhile, many have circled the Pistons’ lack of perimeter shooting as one of the key reasons they aren’t completely sold on them as a legitimate championship threat.

Fisher, however, noted that the Pistons are taking a patient approach.

“The Pistons, as we’ve reported, have signaled that they don’t want to precipitate this pleasant surprise comeback from a 14-68 campaign in 2023-24 with an overly aggressive move during the season,” he reported.

It certainly makes sense that the Pistons don’t want to make any drastic moves, given that patience and a willingness to let things grow organically have been key traits that have gotten them to where they are in the East.

However, if they were able to land a player of Porter Jr.’s caliber. at a reasonable price, they might be too intriguing a prospect to pass up.
