Devin Booker suffered an apparent ankle injury against the Hawks

The Phoenix Suns‘ night against the Atlanta Hawks went on about the turnaround at the end of the third quarter as a star guardian Devin Booker was out with what appeared to be a right ankle injury, adding to an already difficult injury situation for the team.

Booker left the game on Friday after stepping on an opposing player’s foot and limping to the locker room with an assist in the final seconds of the third quarter. His exit came shortly after the Phoenix already lost Jalen Green, who re-aggravated a hamstring injury earlier in the evening and was ruled out for the rest of the game.

It’s the kind of scene that can make any team hold their breath as the sequence unfolded with just over five seconds left in the quarter. Booker was pulling away in transition when he misstepped the Hawks’ Onyeko Okongwu and went down in visible pain.

He remained on the floor for a short time before getting to his feet and heading towards the tunnel under his own power, though he clearly favored the ankle. The Suns have not released official information on his injury status, but what appears to be the sequence is another headache for the Suns.

Before his exit, Booker was wearing the Phoenix offensively. He finished the third quarter with 31 points, four rebounds and three assists, including a dominant stretch in which he scored 16 points in that quarter alone before the nightmare unfolded.

Devin Booker tried to calm things down before his exit, pulling the Suns forward on sheer force of will. And then, as Atlanta obviously demands a sacrifice, it happened again.

Booker’s injury is particularly significant given his recent history, as earlier this month he sprained his left ankle but he managed to come back quickly. The Suns will await further evaluation to determine the severity of Booker’s ankle problem, knowing that any extended absence could significantly affect their momentum as the season progresses.
