Dirk Nowitzki calls out Victor Wembanyama’s “dismissive” comment

The San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder were in battle in NBA Cup semi-finals, and the former managed to win. It was a matchup between two of the best teams in the Western Conference, and the Spurs got some help in this matchup as Victor Wembanyama is back after missing the last few weeks with an injury.

Before the match, an interview with Vembanjam was broadcast, and he was asked about him rivalry with Chet Holmgrenwho have gone to battle several times in the past few years. Instead of giving props to Holmgren, Vembanyama turned his attention to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

“The MVP is on that court, he’s our main focus. It’s hard to guard anyone when you have to help on the MVP,” Vembanyama said.

This has led many to think Vembanjama is taking a shot at Holmgren, which is very understandable, and downplaying what the Thunder center can do.

Dirk Nowitzkion the other hand, he did not like Vembanjama’s comments and had something to say during the broadcast after the broadcast interview.

“I want to say that I didn’t like his answer about Chet Holmgren,” Nowitzki said. “I wish he would have given him some credit. You can say, ‘Hey, they have an MVP. Shai is amazing, but Chet is getting better every year. He’s a champion. I want to play hard against them.’ I didn’t like that answer. To me, that’s too ostentatious, too dismissive of Chet.”

That is also the way to look at Vembanyama’s comments, and it is quite uncertain whether he meant it in that context. It wouldn’t be surprising if he did, as Vembanyama has shown that he is a competitor and doesn’t back down from anyone.

These two will fight for years, and probably decades, and it will be interesting to see what will come of those duels.
