Doc Rivers battled with Kevin Garnett over reconciliation

With Kevin Garnett is returning to the Minnesota Timberwolves in an all-encompassing role under new ownership, there’s no doubt it’s led to a lot of excitement among fans. As The Timberwolves will retire Garnett’s jersey now that the relationship between the team and the players has improved, there has actually been a spat between Garnett and Doc Rivers about returning to the team.

When Minnesota was under owner Glenn Taylor, it’s safe to say that the relationship between the franchise and Garnett was beyond repair for the legendary player due to ownership complaints. Rivers would even tell the Athletic that he and Garnett were “getting into it,” as he advocated for improvement, but the big forward wouldn’t budge.

“There was a part where we were really getting into it because I wanted him to come back here and embrace it,” Rivers said. “If you know Kevin, he’s a… principled man. And I get it. I get it.”

With all that in the past, Garnett and the Timberwolves they are set to have a key connection with the former having a role in many aspects of the franchise, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Rivers, for example, is super “happy” about the news.

“When I saw A-Rod, the first thing I said was congratulations (on winning the battle for the Timberwolves and the Lynx) and retiring Kevin’s jersey. Figure out a way to do it,” said Rivers, who coached Garnett with the Boston Celtics. “Do it. Do it.”

“I’m so happy about it,” Rivers continued. “He deserves to be here. When you think of Minnesota basketball, that has to be the first name, right?”

Either way, Minnesota is currently sitting at 20-10 as they face the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night.
