Duke unleashes mayhem with ACC title win

While Duke probably wasn’t considered a basketball player much earlier, the Blue Devils certainly brought some craziness right before College Football Playoff‘s version of ‘Selection Sunday’.

Late Saturday night, Duke delivered by one of the biggest upsets of the season, knocking off 17th-ranked Virginia 27-20 in overtime to win the ACC Championship Game and throw a proverbial grenade at the Cavaliers’ CFP hopes and dreams. With the win, the Blue Devils anything but officially eliminated UVA from the playoffsand, in the process, made some other people elsewhere in Virginia very, very happy.

While there is little chance that 8-5 Duke will jump into the top 25 on its own and become one of the top five ranked conference champions to lock up a spot in the 12-team playoff, it is widely expected that American champion Tulane and Sun Belt Champion James Madison will become the final two teams in the CFP bracket when it is announced on Sunday.

The randomly named Dukes of JMU especially needed a Blue Devils win on Saturday; at No. 25 in the second-to-last rankings, James Madison almost certainly would have been out there watching Virginia beat Duke, given that JMU would have to leapfrog either UVA or Tulane to be among the top five ranked conference champions.

Fortunately for the Dukes, Duke pulled it off. And people loved it.
